I chose to portray this imagined moment of Mary and Jesus for my Christmas painting this year.  I’ve often wondered what it might have felt like for her to hold Him for the first time. To look down at the tiny face of her Son, knowing He had come to save the world.
 
The olive tree felt like the right place for this moment. One day, in another garden of olive trees, He would kneel again - this time to bear the weight of all our pain, sorrow, and sin.
 
As a mother, I think of all the nights I held my own baby close, wishing I could keep her little forever, safe in my arms. I imagine Mary must have felt the same mix of wonder, love, and ache - wanting to protect the One who came to protect us all.
 
The sheep felt important to include, and I obviously have experienced a very special connection with their symbolism and significance. Even knowing the suffering that awaited Him, we needed a Shepherd - someone to guide, protect, and save us.
 
I hope this painting can be a year-round reminder of the tenderness, love, and strength in holding, protecting, and guiding a child.  I hope it will invite reflection in the sacred moments of motherhood and the deep love that mirrors the perfect love of our Shepherd Jesus Christ.
